AWARENESS SEMINAR ON WORLD DIABETES DAY, AND INAUGURATION OF DIABETIC FOOT CLINIC, CONDUCTED AT FATIMA JINNAH MEDICAL UNIVERSITY LAHORE

The Awareness Seminar on World Diabetes Day, with inauguration of Diabetic Foort Clinic at SGRH, was organized by Department of Medicine and Quality Enhancement Cell, Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU)/ Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore in the Auditorium, FJMU, Lahore.
Prof. Dr. Mehmood Ali Malik Ex-Principal King Edward Medical University graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Vice Chancellor Fatima Jinnah Medical University Prof. Dr. Khalid Masud Gondal along with Deans and Faculty Members also graced the occasion.
The theme of today’s seminar was “Education to Protect Tomorrow”.
Expert Panelists included Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shamsa Humayun, Registrar Prof. Dr. Muhammed Nadeem, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Imran, Director Quality Enhancement Cell Prof. Dr. Bilquis Shabbir, Prof. Dr. M. Naeem Afzal, Prof. Dr. Kamran Khalid, Prof. Dr. Muniza Qayyum, Prof. Dr. Huma Kayani, Prof. Dr. Bilqees Akhtar, Dr. Shahid Anwar and Dr. Aysha Rashid . Dr. Bilal Azeem Butt, Dr. Umbreen Aslam, other Faculty Members, undergraduate students and nurses also attended the Seminar.
In the welcome address, Vice Chancellor Fatima Medical University Prof. Dr. Khalid Masud Gondal thanked the Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Mehmood Ali Malik for honoring this occasion with his presence. He praised Prof. Dr. Mehmood Ali Malik that he is the founder of Endocrinology Specialty. In 1960, he was bestowed Century Best Graduate Award from Hon’ble President of Pakistan Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan in King Edward Medical College, Lahore. He also served as Principal Allama Iqbal Medical College and as the Chairman Board of Governor, Fatima Jinnah Medical College. He is the best example of a Mentor and also a role model for all of us.
In his speech, describing about the diabetes, he said that the foremost objective is awareness about Diabetes. He said that main risk factors include obesity, unhealthy life style, family history of diabetes, unbalanced diet, blood pressure, blood lipid imbalance. If suffering from Diabetes then timely treatment is most important . To prevent this disease, it is important that people change their diet habits and change their life style along with their daily activities and physical exercise. He further apprised that Quackery is also a dilemma of our country. At the end of his speech, he announced that in future, we will start and promote a separate Endocrinology Department at FJMU/ SGRH. He said “Saving the life of one person is like saving the life of all Humanity”.
Prof. Dr. Mehmood Ali Malik in his address described that diabetes is increasing day by day in Pakistan. About 40-50 years back, our life was very active so the prevalence of Diabetes was very low, but now it is increasing rapidly, the reason is our lives have become inactive. We should change our lifestyle. He further said that three things are most significant in this context. One is proper diet, second is active life style and third is Medicine. At the end of his speech, he said, we have to minimize sugar and cholesterol ntake in our daily routine.
A panel discussion of different Clinical Departments was held at the mainstream of the Seminar. It was conducted as a multidisciplinary approach by senior faculty from departments of Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology, Nephrology, Dermatology, Cardiology, Ophthalmologyand Psychiatry.
Awareness Walk on World Diabetes Day was also organized as a token of creating awareness amongst the masses. The VC FJMU and Chief Guest along with senior faculty appreciated the effirts of the teams with the inauguration of Diabetic Foot Clinic, attached to Diabetic Clinic in the outpatients department of the affiliated hospital.
In the concluding session of the seminar, Prof. Dr. Bilquis Shabbir, Prof of Medicine and Director QEC , presented vote of thanks. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal distributed shields among the Chief Guest, and Panelists at the end of the seminar.
