In 1982 an eight bedded, Coronary Care Unit (CCU) was established in main building of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. In 2010, it was shied to third floor of Fama Jinnah Block SGRH, as a
ten bedded independent department. Today, the Department of Cardiology is working with a total of 26 beds, having a fully equipped Coronary Care Unit with 8 beds for acute cardiac emergencies. The department has diagnosc facilies of Echocardiography, Exercise tolerance test, Holter monitoring and ECG for indoor and outdoor paents. There is also capability of performing pericardiocentesis and temporary pacemaker inseron as indicated.
The department is headed by Prof. Bilqees Akhtar. In addion to one Assistant Professor, there are 10 Medical Officers/ Women Medical Officers, 7 House Officers and 3 PGRs in the department. The Department is doing OPD on daily basis. Cardiology Department, FJMU/ SGRH is accredited for MD Cardiology training and Cardiology rotaon of Internal Medicine. Connuous academic acvies including case and topic presentaons by postgraduate students and house physicians are carried out in the department on regular basis.
