Sir Ganga Ram Ophthalmology Department is one of the oldest and most prestigious units, being part of the hospital since 1950s. In initial years Eye and ENT unit were combined and it was the efforts of Professor Lateef Chaudhry that the unit got its independent identity. Since then it is catering to the ocular need of thousands of people yearly, coming from far and near with no boundary of province, city district or any country.
It is a place where first ophthalmology society of Pakistan got its identity and this year in 2017 the Lahore ophthalmology society is celebrating its 60th birthday.
Pioneers in ophthalmology have served this renowned institution and trained many talented ophthalmologists who are providing ophthalmology services nationally and internationally. Legends like Late Professor Dr Bashir and Professor Dr Raja Mumtaz, Professor Lateef Chaudhry, Professor Akram Riaz, Dr Perveen Munawar, Professor Naeemullah Professor Hamid Mehmood, Dr Durdana Masood, Professor Zahid Kamal and presently Professor Huma Kayani Saigol, are but a few who took on the difficult role of heading the department and gave their time and expertise in developing it to international standards .
Current Professor Dr Huma Kayani Saigol is student of this prestigious college. She got trained in this institution and passed through all phases of fellow in training to senior registrar to Assistant Professor to associate and finally Professors and Head of Department in 2016.
She took over the difficult task to carry the legacy of her eminent senior eminent professors who did a fantastic job is developing this faculty.
Eye department provide expertise in all fields of ophthalmology. 24/7 emergency cover to outdoor and indoor plus surgical, laser and diagnostic services pertaining to Ophthalmology.
Cataract, Glaucoma , Oculoplastic, Anterior segment disorders md most of all the Vitreo-retinal pathologies are handled expertly by our trained ophthalmologists.
The ophthalmology Department is recognized by CPSP and our University for FCPS and MS training to post graduate students. At the moment the faculty is training 10 FCPS and 3 MS trainees.
It is well equipped in ocular diagnostics and providing services not onlyto our patients but also to referrals.
The Eye department is one big family who dedicate their time and effort in helping people.
