Today marked a significant event at the Fatima Jinnah Medical University girls’ hostel, as the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal, inaugurated a commendable project led by fourth-year MBBS students. He was accompanied by Pro VC Prof Kamran Khawaja, Chairperson Medicine/Dean Nursing/Director QEC Prof Bilquis Shabbir, Registrar Prof Nadeem Kasuri, Faculty lead Dr Faiza Abrar, and other senior faculty members and students. Building on the momentum of the Grow Green Garden project by Green Youth Movement Club FJMU, a student centered project, which was inaugurated on 24th October 2023. This project focuses on source segregation of waste, aiming to enhance environmental sustainability. Accompanied by dedicated faculty members, the Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of such initiatives in fostering a sense of responsibility among students.
The highlight of the project was the initiation of a compost site within the hostel premises. Organic waste generated in the hostel would be systematically collected and converted into nutrient-rich compost. This environmentally conscious approach not only contributes to waste reduction but also aligns with sustainable practices. The resulting compost will be utilized to nourish the hostel’s lemon garden and other fruit trees, promoting greenery and fostering a sense of eco-consciousness within the university community. Piloting of this project has been done on a smaller scale over the last few months.
The event showcased the university’s commitment to holistic education, incorporating practical initiatives that address real-world challenges. It not only provided a platform for students to apply their academic knowledge but also encouraged a collaborative effort towards building a more environmentally friendly and socially responsible campus.
